Join Jennifer Pattison for a day photography workshop using a smartphone. You will gain confidence in using a smartphone camera to capture flattering portraits both inside and outside and also learn how to use simple editing techniques to adjust colour balance and composition.
Guests will arrive at 10 AM for tea/coffee and a short introduction about Jennifer and her work, focusing on her analogue portraits. This will be followed by a group discussion, looking at the diverse range of portrait photography. There will then be an introduction to basic composition rules, guidance for poses, how to work with flattering available light with examples and practical demonstrations.
Next is an introduction to basic tools (exposure, focal length) and techniques to maximise your smartphone photography indoors. There will be a guided practical, focussing on indoor portraits, taking it in turns to photograph each other. Jennifer will be on hand to support, advise and demonstrate, before results are shared with the group.
After lunch, there will be an outdoor guided practical with Jennifer, focussing on outdoor portraits, taking it in turns to photograph each other. There will be the option to print out one A5 portrait each following the session to take home.

This friendly two-day workshop will help you understand what makes a good painting reference, how to take stronger photographs, and how to turn those photographs into more successful paintings.
Perfect for beginners through to intermediate painters, you'll learn how to see like both a photographer and a painter.
Day 1 – Creating Better Reference Photographs
With Jennifer Pattison
Learn how to use your smartphone more intentionally to capture photographs that work well as painting references.
You'll learn:
What makes a photo paintable
How to spot interesting light, shadow and atmosphere
Simple composition techniques
How to take stronger reference photos on your phone
Basic editing tools to improve your images
Day 2 – From Photograph to Painting
With Kirsten Norbury
Learn how to use photos as a starting point, rather than something to copy exactly.
You'll learn:
How to assess whether a photo is worth painting through simple Notan studies and value patterns
Creating a strong focal point
Simplifying busy scenes
Creating depth and atmosphere
Improving compositions before you start painting
By the end of the workshop, you'll have a better understanding of what to photograph, how to photograph it, and how to turn those images into paintings with greater confidence and visual impact.
You'll come away with a fresh way of seeing, practical photography skills, and a clear process for developing your own photographs into paintings.
